I Talked to Cheeky C about Coping with Child Suicide During the Holidays

Ian was 18 when he died by suicide. Cheeky C is one of my closest friends and Ian’s mom. I remember receiving her call four years ago that he was gone; and I’ve not witnessed a girlfriend survive a more devastating loss. I have come to notice that the winter holidays seem to be the worst for Cheeky C. Although she is a warrior and a survivor, this season hits her hard. My spunky, outspoken, and cheeky pal becomes withdrawn and more downcast. The truth is, I will never have my original Cheeky C back. Losing her son was a traumatic turning point and I know she is changed forever, but this time of year seems to be especially heart-rending.

Russian Sage Bundle for Rustic Fall or Winter Decorating

Each autumn we trim our Russian Sage, or Perovskia Atriplicifolia, nearly to the ground. We do this to keep our plants healthy and thriving. Let me tell you, it works like a charm and these beauties bloom a gorgeous purple all through the following summer. Their aroma reminds me of hearty sage and they are loved by bumble bees. On hot afternoons our fence sounds like a buzzing electric line because of the busy pollinators working from one tiny flower to the next. Continue reading

I am at the crossroads of a new preschool and our familiar early childhood learning center; staring down the road of my little boy’s destiny. Do I  cheer as he spreads his wings, or protectively insist that he stay in his safe cocoon one more year?

A Kid-Free Weekend

In January, Seano and I took our first kid-free vacation since N was born more than three years ago. We spent a long weekend in San Diego. It was absolutely amazing. Like, rejuvenating, thrilling, out-of-this world amazing. And not because we did anything spectacular or went somewhere new. But, because it was the first time in more than three years Continue reading

My Husband Wants to do What this Weekend?

Oh my gosh! Can we just talk about weekends for a minute? The days that are supposed to give us sanity, allow us to spend precious time with our family, and fill us up before we head into another work week. All too often these days end up full of commitments, chores, projects, activities, and who knows what else. I certainly don’t mean to say that the commitments that fill our weekends up and steal them away aren’t worth it or full of things and people I love. But, with too much packed in a weekend, they’re gone in a blink. Let me share a few things with you that I’ve learned about weekends! Continue reading
